New plant for non-destructive testing at ifw Jena

This week, ifw Jena had a new system for radiographic testing in the materials testing laboratory installed. Up to 30x magnifications can be achieved with the new x-ray system.

With the new X-ray machine, the material testing laboratory at ifw Jena continues to qualify for non-destructive testing.

The plant is a special system based on the standard XRH111 system by VisiConsult. It is characterized by the integration of a microfocus X-ray tube from X-RAY WorX GmbH, which offers an acceleration voltage of 225 kV. Due to the microfocus technology it is possible to minimize the geometrical blurring during the radiographic examination, so that large magnifications of up to M = 30 times are possible. Another special feature is the detector exchange system. Here, VisiConsult has for the first time integrated two detectors in one system. One detector is very high resolution with a pixel size of 100 μm, the other one (200 μm pixels) is more sensitive to X-rays, which means that even thicker components with less geometric blurring can be examined. Both detectors allow, in addition to the two-dimensional radiographic examination, computed tomography (CT) images.

The special equipment of the system allows even more detailed and faster testing of metallic components.

The plant could be realized through a project supported by the Free State of Thuringia, which was co-financed by European Union funds under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
