Bachelor or master thesis in simulation

In our simulation department, we are currently working on a project that is suitable for students as a topic for a thesis.

TOPIC

Development of a numerical ray tracing model for the simulation of laser material processing.

PURPOSE

The physical processes in laser material processing are critically influenced by the energy input. The interaction between laser and matter plays an important role. In order to improve the understanding of the energy input and its distribution, ray tracing algorithms are developed and applied in the numerical simulation. These models serve as a basis for further research into various physical phenomena and effects, such as keyhole formation in laser deep welding. Therefore, ray tracing is a prerequisite of the thermodynamic study of laser material processing.

The thermodynamic processes in the processed material are described using the finite volume method. The commercial software ANSYS Fluent is used. In this CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) environment, the ray tracing model is to be implemented in an already existing multiphase model. The basis for this are user-defined-functions, which are implemented with the programming language C.

Within the scope of this bachelor or master thesis a ray tracing model, which can be implemented in ANSYS Fluent, shall be developed. Finally, different benchmarks for the verification of this model shall be developed and implemented.
