Four schoolgirls from Jena visited ifw Jena on Girl's Day to take a look at the institute and in particular the materials testing laboratory. After a tour of the ifw Jena laboratories, the schoolgirls were given additively manufactured samples and the task of extensively testing their samples.
In the process, they learned about the various non-destructive and destructive testing methods, but also about the profession of materials tester. The students subjected their specimens to a tensile test and looked at the fractures under a scanning electron microscope. They also learned about sample preparation methods and examined the interior of the samples in the institute's digital radiography facilities.
In addition, the students were also able to bring their own jewelry to examine it using EDX anaylsis. Here, the students were able to find out whether their jewelry was really made of gold or silver.
