In the field of additive manufacturing research, powder bed and filament-based processes for a wide variety of metallic materials are being investigated and further developed. As a research assistant, you will work on publicly funded projects to optimize additive processes for successful industrial applications.

YOUR TASKS

  • Planning and practical implementation of construction contracts in filament- and powder bed-based additive manufacturing of metals (PBF-LB, metal binder jetting, and FDM/FFF)
  • Design of research projects, application submission, project processing, and documentation
  • Conversion of equipment and setup of technical test benches
  • Performance of measurement tasks and documentation of research results
  • Processing of services and support in contract research

YOUR PROFILE

  • Successfully completed degree or practical training in additive manufacturing, materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, laser technology, or similar
  • Willingness to perform practical work on systems and measuring devices
  • Experience in handling research projects from application to final report is helpful but not a mandatory requirement
  • Initial professional experience in the field of industrial additive manufacturing processes, primarily for metallic materials, is helpful
  • Initial experience in project management is helpful
  • Language skills at least C1 in German and B2 in English (fluent German, business English, understanding of scientific texts)
  • Strong team and communication skills
  • Independent and reliable way of working

As a technical employee in the field of furnace-related processes, you will be responsible for the practical implementation of joining and heat treatment processes. The focus here is particularly on diffusion welding and soft and hard soldering, both in research and in the implementation of technical services. As a welder, you will be employed in the welding technology course center at ifw Jena. You will demonstrate your experience in the various welding processes and pass on your knowledge to course participants in practical exercises and theoretical lessons. As part of your employment, the aim is to qualify as a DVS welding instructor.

YOUR TASKS

  • Accompanying course participants from the first registration to the successful welding examination
  • Practical demonstration and explanation of the various welding processes such as MAG, TIG, manual electric arc welding and gas welding to course participants
  • Conducting theoretical instruction in the various welding courses and vocational training courses offered by ifw Jena, e.g. as part of the training of welding supervisors
  • Maintenance, care and further development of the technical equipment
  • Ensuring compliance with house rules, occupational health and safety regulations
  • Long-term goal is further qualification as a certified DVS welding instructor

YOUR PROFILE

  • Technical vocational training and sound practical experience in welding for common processes
  • Valid welding qualifications for the MAG steel process (basic requirement) and for at least one other process (TIG, manual electric welding or gas welding)
  • Safe handling of applicable standards and guidelines
  • Enthusiasm for the welding trade and the practical demonstration of welding processes
  • Willingness to gain further qualifications as a certified DVS welding instructor is a prerequisite
  • Willingness for continuous personal, technical and didactic development, e.g. in dealing with welding simulators
  • Completed training as an international welding specialist and possession of a valid AdA certificate is desirable

YOUR TASKS

  • Preparation of microsections (cutting, embedding, grinding, polishing, etching) of weld seams (laser, TIG) of different material thicknesses and combinations (steel, aluminum, stainless steel, copper) as well as DMD-manufactured constructions from welding research
  • Characterization of weld seams (measurement of weld seam geometries, microstructure analysis) using light microscopy and image processing software
  • Testing of mechanical-technological properties using hardness measurements (Vickers)
