TOPIC

Fundamental investigations of X-ray emission during industrial ultra-short pulse laser material processing

EVENT

During laser material processing with ultra-short pulses (UKP) of high intensity, ionizing radiation in the form of weak X-rays can be generated. The generated radiation characteristic varies depending on the selected processing parameters and the material to be processed. The resulting radiation dose can become so large that it must be taken into account in terms of occupational safety.

This fact is considered in the current version of the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV) and the Radiation Protection Act (StrlSchG). According to these regulations, laser systems that can exceed certain limit values must be reported. The associated obligations mean a considerable amount of time and money, especially for smaller companies, even if none of the limit values are exceeded for conventional processes.

The aim of the work is on the one hand to deepen the understanding of the generation of ionizing radiation during UKP laser material processing. On the other hand, a broad data basis is to be obtained, on the basis of which simple regulations and recommendations for action in the sense of the StrSchV and the StrSchG can be drawn up. These should serve to be able to estimate the hazard of ionising radiation during UKP processes without the need for complex measurements.

YOUR TASKS

  • Preparation and implementation of parameter investigations for the generation of ionising radiation
  • Evaluation and interpretation of the test results
  • Cooperation in the development of models, approaches and recommendations for action

RECOMMENDED COURSES OF STUDY AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Study of laser technology, physics, photonics, laser and opto-technologies, or a comparable course of study
  • Ideally first experiences in the field of laser technology and/or its application in the field of UKP laser processing
