This year, ifw Jena is once again training welding specialists in accordance with DVS-IIW guideline 1170! Registration is now open.

This training course is aimed at all companies that carry out welding work in a regulated area and are required to employ a welding supervisor. For employees in the welding technology sector, training to become an international welding specialist is an ideal opportunity to advance their career and expand their field of activity. After successfully completing the final exam, participants receive the title of “International Welding Specialist” and can take on responsibility as a welding supervisor in their company.

  • Practical exercises covering all common welding processes

COURSE LOCATION

The course is mostly hybrid: All theoretical lessons are online. You can join in via video conference from anywhere.

You have to be at the ifw Jena in person for the practical exercises and exams.

DATES

The training takes place on a part-time basis as a weekend course, always on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The entire training course begins on November 7, 2025, and ends on April 14, 2026.

  • Part 0: November 7 to 21, 2025
  • Part 1: November 28 to December 19, 2025
  • Part 2: January 9 to 24, 2026
  • Part 3: January 30 to March 28, 2026
  • Final exams: April 2 to 14, 2026

PREREQUISITES

Previous parts of the training can be skipped if a participant meets certain requirements.

  • From Part 0: Skilled worker or journeyman with at least 3 years of experience in metalworking and at least 22 years of age.
  • From Part 1: Master craftsman's certificate in metalworking, industrial master craftsman's certificate, technician with recognized qualification, or graduate engineer.
  • From part 2: Master craftsman with valid certificate from a recognized master craftsman school confirming that the contents of part 1 have been taught in accordance with DVS guideline 1170
  • From part 3: Only for DVS welding foremen

COSTS

  • Part 0: Course: $750, exam: $260
  • Part 1: Course: $620, exam: $260
  • Part 2: Internship: $1,500
  • Part 3: Course: $2,150, exam: $610

FUNDING

Training to become an international welding specialist at ifw Jena is eligible for funding. The Employment Agency supports employers, employees, and job seekers with education vouchers or through employee qualification programs.
