Optimized lost patterns for investment casting produced by 3D printing through the development of a technically advanced, innovative process chain

3D printing processes are suitable for producing complex three-dimensional lost models and subsequently molds. These are used to produce metallic components using the investment casting process. However, there is still great potential for improvement with regard to the dimensional accuracy of these lost models, their rough surface due to the stair-step effect and the avoidance of ashes produced during combustion, which lead to defects in the component, which is to be exploited in this project.
The approach being pursued is the development of an advanced, innovative process chain that systematically solves the problems that have arisen to date. Process parameters for modern plastic filaments with reduced ash content after incineration will be developed and process parameter dimensional stability studies will be carried out using modern optical 3D scanning measurement technology.
The process chain to be developed starts with the creation of the build data for 3D printing, followed by the printing process in FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) itself, the removal of the support structures, an additional step for drying the components and finally an optimized smoothing process to achieve greatly improved surface properties.
