Qualification of bio-composites for adhesive bonding
Plastics provide the basis for a growing number of innovations. As part of sustainable development, there is now a bioplastic alternative for almost every conventional plastic material and application. Bioplastics have the same or similar properties as conventional plastics and offer additional benefits, such as a reduced carbon footprint. The project is dedicated to bonding these materials together and with other lightweight materials. The aim is to qualify the group of materials for new areas of application. To this end, biocomposites with variously graded biological residue contents and different surface roughnesses are being investigated and bonded, and the bond strengths and aging resistances of the bondings are being evaluated. Different surface pretreatments are used to optimize the bonding surfaces. The bondings are carried out with bio-based and with conventional petroleum-based adhesives. Based on the results of the investigations, user rules are subsequently documented which provide information on the processability and use of the bio-based plastics and adhesives.
