Quality assurance of diffusion bonds
Diffusion bonding is increasingly used in the manufacture of injection molds or in aerospace applications, where heat management processes and component safety are of high importance. The potential lies in the fact that complex and large-area component geometries can be produced with a high-quality bond, which cannot be manufactured using conventional metalworking strategies. In contrast to conventional welding processes, however, diffusion welding does not yet have any evaluation rules for the welded components that define permissible and impermissible irregularities. The aim of the project is to use non-destructive testing methods to assess real defects in diffusion-welded components and thus improve the reliability of diffusion welding. The recording of process data plays a supporting role in the manufacturing process, enabling corrective action to be taken even during the welding process. The knowledge gained can be used to increase the process reliability of the joining process and thus minimize process times, reject rates and manufacturing costs in industrial applications.
