Development of a manufacturing process and construction of prototypes of a new free-standing neutron guide for ultra cold neutrons

Ultracold neutron (UCN) research is a modern branch of neutron research. An essential component of these UCN sources is the neutron guide. In principle, a UCN guide is a round tube with a diameter of 50 to 150 mm, which is mirrored and coated on the inside. A neutron guide for UCN is quite different from a guide for "normal" neutrons. The currently only UCN source uses internally mirrored glass tubes as neutron guides. For the development of stronger sources, conductors are needed whose required properties can no longer be fulfilled by the material glass.
Therefore, UCN conductors with the following properties are to be developed in the project: Completely made of metal, round and neutron-tight, atomically smooth (Ra ≤ 0.5 nm) tube segments of 3 meters length without flange connection.
